Laguna Revo 18|36 Lathe, 2HP, 220V

Abundant capacity, refined features and plenty of raw power make the Laguna Revo 18|36 Lathe, 2HP, 220V a standout among lathes.

Rating:
92% of 100

The Revo 18|36 Lathe from Laguna combines power, precision and advanced features, resulting in a turning experience like no other. The lathe features a polished steel bed for the utmost in strength and stability, and the smoothest possible movement of the headstock, tailstock and tool rest. A full 18'' of outboard capacity allows you to turn large bowls, while 36'' of inboard capacity lets you turn long spindles, table legs and island legs. The lathe is powered by a unique motor that converts a 1-phase input to a 3-phase output. This 3-phase output delivers smooth, even power, even when the lathe is under heavy loads. It also provides infinitely variable speed within the two general speed ranges without sacrificing power or torque at lower RPMs. The anodized aluminum control panel is exquisitely designed, and angled for easy visibility and accessibility to all knobs. It features a large blue-hued digital read-out that gives you precise RPM readouts at all times, and easy adjustments with the comfortable rubber-coated knob.

Features:
  • Quick-release handle for switching from high to low speed ranges
  • Rear-mounted handles eliminate obstructions on the front of the lathe
  • Handles are comfortably designed, and use a cam lock for fast, secure tightening and release
  • Centers can be stored on the tailstock
  • Spindle lock is spring-loaded
  • Forward and reverse feature lets you reverse the lathe for sanding—great for directing dust away from the user and into a dust hose

A Serious Lathe!
I’ve only had the 18/36 for two weeks so I hope my impressions remain positive for years to come. I liked it right out of the crate. I strongly recommend you watch Lagunas YouTube tutorials on the unboxing and assembly of the lathe. It will make the process much easier and quicker as will 2 or 3 strong friends.
This lathe has everything I was looking for in an upgrade from my Delta 14/40 Iron Bed. Versatility, 220 volt power, stability, variable speed, quiet operation all at a price that didn’t break the bank.
Everything fit together perfectly right out of the box...No missing parts, no damaged threads...Fit and finish was outstanding! Absolutely no problem jumping from my old lathe to this one.
I will definitly recommend the Laguna 18/36 to any serious turner...It’s a serious lathe.

Laguna Revo 18/36 Lathe
After many years I decided to replace an old Delta lathe made in 1985. After considerable research I purchased the Laguna Revo 18/36 (2HP, 220V) Lathe from Rockler. The machine is exceptional. I only regret not purchasing the lathe sooner.

Way better than my previous lathe.
This is my second lathe: The variable speed is great and switching between the 2 pulleys is so easy. The setup took about 2 hrs and I was turning that evening. The lathe is smooth and pretty quite. I would recommend and had no issues!

Great Lathe
I outgrew my excelsior lathe, was pushing the limits, was told to stop whining and buy a bigger lathe. After much review I chose the Revo. Am totally thrilled with the new capacity and feature. I turn bowls and can now do 18” dia, the variable speed is a dream, reverses enhances my sanding and finishing with knarly grains. The weight of this machine allows smooth turning of out of balance blanks. Let the chips fly.
Wet maple blank in the making, chips pile up fast.
Hard old cherry from an old barn find, probably cut down 50+ years ago.
Spalted maple finishing bottom.

Want to explore larger turning, good price and will allow to control the speed of turning a variety of objects. Have turned on a midi-lathe for ten years, ready to step up. This lathe will give me the ability to expand to larger turnings.

Laguna produces quality products. I believe that using the 1836 has improved my ability to turn bowls, boxes, finials and anything that requires turning. The alinement of the tail stock and head stock is a bit off and I've tried to aline them with out total success. However, the machine is a great middle of the road machine. I suspect that for the features on the base model, one would pay about $1K more on other machines. I would indeed recommend this machine.

Do the legs come with this, or are they extra?
jimsworkshop on Sep 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Legs come with it, this is not a bench lathe. Legs have screw on plastic base feet to allow leveling adjustments.
so i'm a little confused by the A/C power specs -- what does this thing need to plug in to?
Dv on Feb 12, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It takes 220v single phase power. Make sure you know what plug type you need when you buy it.
how easy is it to change belt if breaks??
john m on Sep 1, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It is not hard to replace the belt on this or other belted lathes like this one such as the Oneway or Jet lathes. THere are several Youtube videos out there and it takes about an hour. If you do need to replace it (and that probably will not be for 5 or 10 years) you may as well replace the shaft bearings as well since you have to partially remove the drive shaft to get the new belt on.
Does the head assembly rotate as well as slide rt to lt?
Bob on Sep 23, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No rotation but you could remove head and turn it 180 deg
I have a new 18/36 220 volt lathe. The Delta S1 VFD still has power to it when the lathe motor is off. Is this normal? If so should I unplug the lathe when not in use?
Tom R on Jan 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: VFD’s are kind of a weird animal. They do not like having their input power cycled on and off. Frequent power ups and downs can significantly shorten their service life. Most manufacturers recommend leaving the VFD powered unless the unit will be shut down for an extended period. I leave mine on unless we leave for a week or so, then I unplug it. Using the E-Stop button will blank the display and make it harder for unauthorized users to play with the lathe. It’s a great lathe! I really enjoy mine.
My 18x36 Laguna lathe has been kicking out. Will restart but stops turning, not sure why seems to be on smaller work ?
TIM H on Jan 14, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I had this problem last winter and have a similar (same?) problem now. Laguna sent me a replacement relay and (eventually) replacement on/off switch. The relay seemed to work, but my lathe is having issues again. Agree with the above: call customer service.
are the speeds done wiith digital controls or do you have to move the belts?
jaydee on Jun 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The lathe has two sets of pulleys. One for high (135 - 3500 RPM) and one for low (50 - 1300 RPM). The lathe comes with the belt on the high pulleys. The speed control is digital through the speed range depending on which set of pulleys the belt is set on.
is there a bed extension available for this ?
jeff r on Sep 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: There is a 20" extension for the Laguna Revo 18/36. Unfortunately we don't sell it.
How many people have had problems with the on/ off switch?
John B on Jan 18, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I don’t think it the off on switch. I have to go to the back of the machine and rest the drive on the beige box. The the switch works again. It happens about once ever two months.
is there and adapter to use chucks with one inch by one eigthth threads on the lugna 18-36?
Arv A on Jul 4, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Certainly. I assume you're trying to use 1" headstock (the Laguna is 1.25x8tpi). Sorby, Penn State industries, Nova and others sell them (because their lathes are 1"). Cost is modest ($20-30).
Total length of unit you mention floor space 60 in Is that the motor end to bed end? I have about 77 in for the location.
craig f on Jul 15, 2017
BEST ANSWER: The total length from the end of the motor to the ball handle for the tail stock is 72 and one half inches. That is with tail stock extended completely to the end of the bed.If you have 77 inches it will fit.
how many amps the the 2hp draw? what gauge wire from electrical breaker to receptecle?
Loren G on Mar 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Best answered by your electrician. 20amps, I used 10 gage commercial wiring at my shop with a 20 amp breaker. A 15 amp breaker is recommended. 15 amp, 250volts nema 6-15r, 2p, 3w, U33 receptacle. Or a 20amp, 250 volts nema 6-20r U33-1 receptacle. The manual has a lot of great info. Basically everything you need to know is in it. Great machine, great price, I wouldn’t recommend any lathe under $2500. Be there done that.. this machine will last me 20 years. If you are a professional lathe smith and are wealthy. Buy the powermatic for almost 8k. Otherwise stick with this beast. I turned a wet black walnut log into a sweet bowl in no time.
what are the total demensions and floor to lathe center height?
woodcruiser on Oct 22, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Legs @ floor 26” deep x 58” w. Floor to drive center is 24.5 inches. The motor sticks out an additional 11.5 inches on the width.
What's the tool rest diameter...1" or 25mm?
