Excellent dovetail jig
I used this on a large dresser case. There are through dovetails on the top corners, and half blind dovetails on the bottom joints. The instructions are excellent and guide you through all the steps. After one practice joint for through and half blind joints I was able to cut the custom joints for the case. The adjustable fingers made this all the better. This is an excellent jig although you pay for those features and quality.

There’s a learning curve to it, but all of the info is included. I knocked out some drawers the first day, after setting it up and doing a few test cuts. I did blind dovetails on the front and through dovetails on the back, and they looked great, just like hand cut dovetails, with small pins and large tails.

Works!
Directions are intense, but once you watch some vids, you get the hang of it. I had a D4 and although I used it a few times, it never really gave me the results I had hoped for. This D4R Pro is giving me exactly what I wanted in the clean fitting dovetail joint. I especially like the half blind joints as they are one pass and equally good fitting. I also used the box joint capability in making a full case for the jig. Once you get thru the set ups, it works!

This is a really good jig. It's nice not having to worry about drawer height to get half dovetail at top and bottom of drawer. Start at the beginning of the manual and go through step by step. It took about four hours to get where I wanted to be, now it's easy, accurate and pretty darn quick when compared to hand cutting. I would recommend this jig to a friend.

worth every penny
I got this jig after looking at dozens of different dovetail jigs because of Leighs' reputation for quality and its adjustability. I am truly impressed at the level of detail in the instruction manual as well as the machines ease of adjustability and use. Every dovetail I cut came out absolutely perfect. If your serious about your work and pride your self on your quality and precision like I do then this is the dovetail jig for you. In my opinion its worth every penny, especially considering the number of different joints this machine can make.

Is the thickest stock 1 1/2 inches in which half blind dovetails can be cut with the D4?
Ron B on Aug 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, this is because of the router bit length. In other words the depth of cut is limited by the depth of cut that can be produced by the router. Although the clamp on the jig can only be opened so wide, there are different ways to clamp the work piece.
What would be an ideal router to use with the Leigh D4R Pro? Size, power, brand?
Wayo on Jan 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I use an DeWalt DW618 which works fine for me. Can't say about other routers
What is the thinnest stock that can be used in this jig?
Nick H on Oct 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: It would be what ever the clamp could securely and safely hold without damaging the stock. For example, I usually make my own veneers by re-sawing stock on my band saw and cleaning up the face of the venner by running it through my thickness planner. I can safely reduce the thickness to about 3/32. If I took that and tried clamping it into the D4R Pro jig it would likely distort or mar the stock because the clamping surface is milled with substantial grooves in it in order to provide gripping power. If you were wanting to make dove tails in anything less than 1/4 inch thick I would suggest hand cutting them. That said, it is possible to sandwich your stock between 2 pieces of waste stock in order to safely clamp and route the tails and pins but you would have to use the exact same thickness of waste stock on both pieces to get the tails and pins to line up correctly. Hope this helps.

What will the M2 mortise and tenon attachment do

BEST ANSWER: Sorry, haven't tried it yet. However, the basic jig is outstanding. I'm currently building a desk with dovetail file cabinets. Works perfectly.
